This webinar is designed to bring the issues of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and stewardship (AMS) to the forefront of our consciousness as a continent and highlight the roles of pharmacists and other healthcare personnel, and ways of curbing the issue in private facilities, many of which are unregulated sources of antimicrobials within the healthcare delivery system in various countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Pharmacists as athlete support personnel have rooted themselves as key players in medical teams serving athletes. Sports pharmacy evolved from a niche practice during the establishment of WADA two decades ago, gaining traction with the publication of the FIP guidelines “The Role of the Pharmacist in the Fight against Doping in Sport” in 2014. Today, we recognise sports pharmacy as a specialty practice, fundamental to the antidoping movement and athlete health. Pharmacists provide accurate sports drug information, avoid inadvertent doping, and coordinate pharmacy services at sporting events. We present two successful models in education and proper training of pharmacists to work with athletes.

Despite the impact of the pandemic on 2020 business plans and working environments, FIP persevered to deliver and launch the FIP Development Goals for our members and the profession worldwide, understanding the need to provide directions and goals in the coming years as we live with and (hopefully) move out of the pandemic.

In 2021, we ran a full programme to identify the priority goals for the decade ahead across our regions and members. In this event we recap the key outcomes and priorities across the world region which we captured in a new report.

Join us for launch the FIP Development Goals Report 2021 “Setting goals for the decade ahead” which provides a global status update on the goals one year on since their launch and serves as an anchor point that will facilitate the next decade’s roadmap aligned with the UN Agenda 2030.

We will also be launching a new ‘microsite’, a digital platform that serves as a web-based resource for the Development Goals. The microsite collates FIP’s work, publications, events and other outputs mapped to the goals by theme, alongside tools and resources for our members.

Episode 11 of the FIP Development Goals Digital Programme is focused on “advancing integrated services”. The goal visualizes a people-centred and integrated health care provision that is based on an interprofessional and cross-setting seamless continuum including pharmacist-delivered professional services. A Direct Application of the FIP Basel Statements on Human Resources, Training and Development & Aligned with FIP Development Goals.

Both the FIP Development Goals and the Hospital Pharmacy Section Basel Statements list the competency of the pharmacy workforce as important. In a listing of priority goals from the DG and the BS, FIP members identify competency goals as a top priority. The HPS Vice Presidents also list competency as a high priority for advancing hospital pharmacy practice. The webinar will address curricula and ongoing continuing education to provide students and practitioners with the necessary knowledge and skills for contemporary hospital pharmacy services.

The 3rd episode of the programme explores FIP Development Goal 16: Communicable diseases. Through this goal, we aim to oversee the prevention, surveillance, scientifically strategic management and therapeutic optimisation of communicable and vector-borne diseases. This event will take place during World Immunisation Week and it will reiterate the commitment of pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists and pharmaceutical educators to improving vaccination coverage around the world, and to further support the prevention and management of communicable diseases.
