FIP Hub

The FIP Hub | An engine room for the advancement of Pharmacy Worldwide

Advancing Practice, Advancing Workforce, Advancing Science

The FIP Hub provides a "ONE FIP" approach to advancing the global vision for the entire pharmaceutical profession by supporting the continued implementation of the FIP Development Goals (DGs) among our Members through tools, frameworks, and evidence. It integrates elements of the pharmaceutical workforce, practice, and science in alignment with the DGs. These efforts are closely linked to the broader FIP mission and aligned with the World Health Organization's (WHO) Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Astana Declaration of 2018.

The Hub facilitates cross-sectoral collaboration and supports our volunteers in applying their skills and expertise. Guided by our FIP priorities and the DGs, and meeting the needs of our Members, the Hub serves as a focal point for projects and activities, monitoring progress and tracking evidence and impact at global, regional, and national levels.

What is the FIP Hub

How the FIP Hub works

Who's involved in the FIP Hub?

Our story

In 2016, FIP developed 13 Pharmaceutical Workforce Development Goals (PWDGs) to support the implementation of its vision for Education and Workforce at the Global Conference held in Nanjing. The Nanjng Vision and Statements reaffirmed the commitment of FIP to assisting its Members with the implementation of the PWDGs and workforce transformation to meet global healthcare needs. The Workforce Development Hub (WDH) was initially established to develop tools and frameworks for implementing the PWDGs.

To support our Member Organisations (MOs) in implementing these initiatives at the country level, the FIP Workforce Transformation Programme was launched in 2019. Since then, the original 13 PWDGs have evolved, through a process of global consensus, into 21 FIP Development Goals, encompassing the principal areas for advancing the pharmaceutical profession globally, crucially including practice, pharmaceutical science and education.

As an organisational progression, the WDH transformed into the FIP Hub to encompass the full scope of developmental transformation. In its current form, the FIP Hub fulfils its mission to ensure that FIP continues to deliver its commitment to the Astana Declaration by driving progress across the workforce, education, practice, and scientific dimensions of the DGs, while fostering the broader mission of FIP and its Member and constituencies.

The FIP Hub structure and governance

The FIP President and nominated Vice-Presidents oversee the Council-approved strategic direction of the Hub through a Hub Steering Group, which functions as an accountable senior management team for this significant FIP structure. The Hub Steering Group provides recommendations to a management and operations group, comprising all Hub Directors, FIP staff members, and chaired by the CEO. This unit serves as a project reporting group and is responsible for managing collaborative linkages on Goal-driven projects and activities between Hub Global Leads, volunteers, FIP Boards, their Sections, Special Interest Groups, and other FIP structures.

DGs remain the primary focus of the FIP Hub.

Projects and activities

The Hub’s involvement in projects and activities extend across three key areas of work:

  1. FIP Development Goals: monitoring progress and evaluating impact and implementation
  2. Pharmaceutical intelligence through the Global Pharmaceutical Observatory (GPO): Data capture and reporting; analysis and informing; Learn more about GPO's latest publication, the Global Situation Report on Pharmacy, here
  3. Expanding the global evidence base on pharmaceutical education, workforce and practice.

The Hub is dedicated to advancing pharmacy practice and workforce development through impactful activities inspired by FIP's Brisbane Calls to Action (CstA) and the subsequent workshop. These initiatives, rooted in the collective insights and expertise of FIP's global members and constituencies, address key themes such as advancing digital health, optimising workforce deployment, enhancing equity and inclusivity, promoting mental health and wellbeing, and supporting competency development frameworks. By prioritising these areas, the Hub drives progress in pharmacy's contribution to health systems worldwide, fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable positive practice environments.

Hub-led projects aim to deepen understanding of the global landscape, innovations, and emerging methods and tools in specific, priority-driven areas of healthcare need. Hub DG Leads and volunteers collaborate with wider forums and expert groups to implement their work plans through literature reviews, case study development, policy analyses, and quantitative and qualitative research. These efforts result in evidence-based frameworks and guidance to inform policy and practice development. Reports and tools are rigorously tested, validated, and shared with FIP’s global community of practice for adoption and implementation.
