Programmes

Promoting Safe Household Medicine Disposal for a Sustainable Future (Paraguay, completed in 2025)
The Paraguayan Association of Pharmacists implemented a pilot programme promoting the safe disposal of expired and unused medicines through collection points installed in 22 community pharmacies across the country. The initiative also included training for pharmacists and pharmacy staff, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with governmental authorities and specialised waste management companies to ensure the safe disposal of collected medicines. The project demonstrated strong public engagement, with 100% positive feedback from participants and increasing use of the collection points throughout the programme. It also highlighted the important role of community pharmacies in environmental protection, public health education and the responsible use of medicines, providing a scalable model that could be implemented nationwide.

Antimicrobial Resistance Profile of Staphylococcus aureus in Hospitalised Patients: A Focus on Community-Acquired Infections (Colombia, completed in 2025)
This project evaluated the antimicrobial resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus among hospitalised and outpatient populations, with a particular focus on community-acquired infections. Conducted at the Hospital Universidad del Norte, the study analysed 1,473 patients and generated local evidence to support antimicrobial stewardship programmes and the revision of institutional treatment guidelines. The findings identified high susceptibility to several first-line antimicrobials while highlighting significant resistance to others, reinforcing the importance of continuous microbiological surveillance. The project also included educational activities for healthcare professionals and the public to promote the responsible use of antimicrobials, further strengthening the pharmacist's role in preventing and controlling antimicrobial resistance.
