2026Dermatopharmacy: An interdisciplinary field focusing on pharmacotherapy for lifelong skin health management

As the largest organ of the human body, the skin serves as a physical, chemical, microbial and immune barrier. However, the pathogenesis of many skin diseases remains poorly understood, while increasing public awareness of skin continues to raise expectations for effective prevention and treatment. Together, these factors create a pressing need and an opportunity for the emergence of dermatopharmacy.

Established in 2023 as a distinct interdisciplinary field, dermatopharmacy integrates pharmaceutical sciences with clinical dermatology, spanning laboratory research, translational medicine and clinical practice. This article reviews the development of the discipline, scope and future direction, highlighting priorities in basic research, clinical standardisation, international collaboration and education. This work is presented by Jinyuan Ma, Zongguang Tai, Zhongjian Chen, Quangang Zhu from Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Zhengyu Chen from the International Pharmaceutical Federation, Yuehong Xu, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Nianping Feng, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Song Hu from Wuhan No.1 Hospital and Jinhong Hu from Changhai Hospital, Naval Medical University.
