Non-communicable diseases are causing the most deaths worldwide, a burden felt most heavily in low-income and middle-income countries. Tackling them calls for prevention, continuity of care and vaccination: The three themes examined at the opening plenary session, “Advancing global action on NCDs: People-centred care,” of the 84th FIP world congress in Montreal, Canada. Esbe Banerjee reports.

2026Translating global NCD commitments and policies to action

The second plenary session continued the discussion on advancing global action on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), shifting the focus from policy to implementation. The discussion began with why action is needed, then identified some of the biggest challenges hindering implementation, before concluding with what implementation means for pharmacists. The panellists encouraged pharmacists to view NCDs as a life-saving task, utilising competency-based education and risk communication skills when asking patients about their vaccination status. The second part of the session was the launch of The FIP Montreal Declaration on NCDs, signed during the session by FIP president Paul Sinclair, and Deb Saltmarche, chair of the Canadian Pharmacists Association. The session concluded with FIP member organisations and partners voicing their support towards the declaration. Dr Mariet Eksteen reports.
