Educators and trainers can from today access a global competency framework for the pharmaceutical education sector published by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) to support their advancement through personal and professional development. “The federation has previously published competency frameworks for early career development and to support development of advanced practice, but this new resource presents, for the first time, a set of competencies for pharmaceutical educators and trainers globally, along with a validated self-evaluation and career development tool. This evidence-based framework benefits from FIP’s rich experience in creating tools for both competence evaluation and development,” said Dr Arijana Meštrović, FIP Academic Pharmacy Section vice president, Workforce Development Hub global lead for competency development, and the project lead and a co-author of the framework.
The framework, initiated by FIP’s Academic Pharmacy Section, has been written by global leaders in pharmaceutical education active in academia, practice and science, in collaboration with experts from across the federation. “Being an educator in pharmacy involves much more than the vital roles of lecturing and assessing learners’ competence and achievements. Understanding the importance of our own reflection, evaluation and planning in continuing personal and professional development is essential to fulfilling our roles, and the structure of the framework encourages this process,” Dr Meštrović said.
The “FIP global competency framework for educators and trainers in pharmacy” defines competencies and groups them under six categories: (1) education, training and development; (2) research, evaluation and scholarship; (3) expert professional practice; (4) working with others; (5) management, strategy and planning; and (6) leadership. Indicators for each competency are defined, as are behaviours under each indicator for three different levels of edcuator/trainer advancement.
“This resource is a continuation of FIP’s commitment to empower its members. We believe that it is a valuable source of information and will guide our colleagues in pharmacy education at individual, organisational, national and global levels. We invite academic and professional institutions, as well as mentors, preceptors, pharmacists and individual educators to use it for their own professional and personal development and continuing improvements in the quality of pharmacy education,” Dr Meštrović added.
