FIP World List
of Pharmacy Schools

FIP, as the global leader for pharmacy, has taken the initiative to build the “FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools”, which will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of pharmacy institutions from around the world. This global list is intended to guide all pharmacy stakeholders, from students to policymakers, in assessing the appropriateness and effectiveness of pharmacy education strategies. The availability, completeness and quality of FIP’s World List of Pharmacy Schools means it will provide a unique source of information for pharmaceutical workforce policies, procedures and plans.

Further background on the FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools:

The FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools is an initiative to monitor pharmaceutical capacity and capability, similar to those of many other global organisations, such as the World Medical Schools List held by the World Medical Association. Given 2021 is the World Health Organization’s Year of Health and Care Workers, the need for our global organisations to demonstrate increased capacity in all health workers is key to ensure our professions are not further diminished but amplified.

FIP is a founder member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) with doctors, nurses, dentists, and physiotherapists. All WHPA members have been requested to feedback their schools’ status to the WHO as part of pandemic preparedness, and FIP having a list of accredited pharmacy schools will help to identify where schools may be needed and created to ensure long-term pharmaceutical workforce capacity.

Our college accepted its first class of 32 full-time students into the first year of its Bachelor’s degree of Pharmacy in September 1997. A 2-year add-on PharmD was introduced in 2016 as an elective means to expand the education of pharmaceutical professional activities and services. The college is currently phasing out its five-year BPharm curriculum and 2-year add-on PharmD, into an integrated competency-based 7-year entry-to-practice PharmD. The complete implementation of the new curriculum will be completed in 2027.

Our classes are composed mainly of Kuwaiti citizens in mixed classes (male and female). Our enrolment ceiling was recently increased from 63 to 100 students. Most graduates go on to serve at the Ministry of Health, in a network of secondary and tertiary hospitals and polyclinics. The scope of practice has recently been expanded to include additional professional activities to be provided by pharmacists with a PharmD degree.

The college has four established departments with appointed chairmen: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Pharmacy Practice (includes clinical pharmacy). Each department conducts world-class research, using state-of-the-art equipment. A MSc degree in Pharmaceutical sciences is offered since 2014 to better support the development of our research capacity and to mentor young scientist development.

Our college, the only pharmacy college in the country, is composed of around 150 exceptional women and men committed to excellence towards our mission, thus contributing to the advancement of pharmacy knowledge, education and practice in Kuwait.
