A comprehensive report from the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals the extent of the physical and psychological damage done to healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic because the health systems they worked in failed to protect them. It pulls together evidence of the impact of the pandemic from the WHPA’s five members, FDI World Dental Federation, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), World Physiotherapy and the World Medical Association (WMA), which in total represent 41 million healthcare professionals.Today at the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) fifth Global Forum on Human Resources for Health, FIP joined global organisations representing nursing, dentistry, medicine and physiotherapy at a session organised by the WHPA, the report and healthcare workers’ needs and concerns were presented to officials, policy makers and civil society. The report was developed under the framework of joint action underlined in the memorandum of understanding signed by the WHO and WHPA members last November and is a synthesis of evidence from organisations’ surveys and reports during the pandemic. It is the first assessment of its kind and will provide useful insights to inform policy responses and priorities to protect, safeguard and invest in the health and care workforce. More here.
