  The life expectancy of Indigenous Australians is seventeen years below that of their Australian non-indigenous counterparts1. The prevalence of diabetes, renal disease, heart disease, stroke, infectious diseases and asthma is many times higher and occurs at a younger age in the Indigenous compared with the non-Indigenous Australian population2.
