Views on the benefits and challenges of e-labelling in pharmacy are shared in a new FIP insight board report today. The insight board discussion, held in September 2023, highlighted the value of e-labelling and its impact on pharmacy. Advantages included improving environmental sustainability and patient health literacy through access to relevant information. Additionally, e-labelling enables tailored information delivery, promoting improved self-care and sustainability of the healthcare system. During the discussion, experts highlighted barriers to e-labelling in their respective regions and countries, and the challenges in immediate implementation. Barriers encompassed digital literacy gaps, access disparities, security concerns and implementation complexity. Pharmacists are expected to take bigger roles in patient education and guidance on e-labels, as well as in empowerment and collaboration with other stakeholders, the report says.
