Move towards competency-based education further supported by new FIP handbook

Competency-based education (CBE) in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences is the subject of a new handbook published by FIP today. Since 2010, CBE has been the core of the needs-based education model initially set as a foundation for the FIP Pharmacy Education Action Plan by the WHO-UNESCO-FIP Pharmacy Education Taskforce. A move towards CBE in health professional education aligns with FIP’s vision to advance pharmacy worldwide through pharmacy and pharmaceutical education. FIP has supported pharmacy leaders and educators in their endeavours to embed CBE by developing tools such as the FIP Global Competency Framework and Global Advanced Development Framework. This new handbook provides step-by-step guidance for educators to implement CBE concepts in their pharmacy education and training. “Educators and trainers would be well-advised to keep a copy of this handbook on their virtual desktop as a go-to resource for developing and implementing a successful CBE programme at any stage of the learning process,” said Ralph Altiere, chair of FIP Education.
