As pharmacists and other healthcare workers around the world do their best to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to keep people safe, prevention and patient safety ― the theme of the latest issue of the latest IPJ published today ― are at the heart of their discussions. Never have the demands on our profession been so great or so urgent. We report on how COVID-19 is affecting colleagues on front lines around the world, but let’s not forget the burden of other diseases. It’s estimated, for example, that 420,000 people died of asthma in 2016, seasonal influenza is associated with up to 500,000 deaths each year, and 770,000 people died of HIV in 2018. The need for pharmacists to help prevent these and other diseases and to ensure patient safety remain. This new issue of the IPJ contains a selection of articles sharing disease prevention and patient safety ideas and inspiration that can be taken into the post-pandemic future.
