FIP World List
of Pharmacy Schools

FIP, as the global leader for pharmacy, has taken the initiative to build the “FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools”, which will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of pharmacy institutions from around the world. This global list is intended to guide all pharmacy stakeholders, from students to policymakers, in assessing the appropriateness and effectiveness of pharmacy education strategies. The availability, completeness and quality of FIP’s World List of Pharmacy Schools means it will provide a unique source of information for pharmaceutical workforce policies, procedures and plans.

Further background on the FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools:

The FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools is an initiative to monitor pharmaceutical capacity and capability, similar to those of many other global organisations, such as the World Medical Schools List held by the World Medical Association. Given 2021 is the World Health Organization’s Year of Health and Care Workers, the need for our global organisations to demonstrate increased capacity in all health workers is key to ensure our professions are not further diminished but amplified.

FIP is a founder member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) with doctors, nurses, dentists, and physiotherapists. All WHPA members have been requested to feedback their schools’ status to the WHO as part of pandemic preparedness, and FIP having a list of accredited pharmacy schools will help to identify where schools may be needed and created to ensure long-term pharmaceutical workforce capacity.

QUT, or the then Central Technical College, was Queensland’s first pharmacy school.  After a hiatus, pharmacy returned to QUT in 2006 with a focus on producing work-ready graduates.  Our graduates are sought after for intern and then pharmacist positions due to this work-ready focus and preferred by large national pharmacy franchises.
QUT has recently moved to a Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours and the first students of this new course will graduate in 2018.  The course focus is to blend pharmacy’s theoretical and science underpinnings into a clinical focus to generate a graduate ready to embrace pharmacy practice today and into the future.  The profession is undergoing rapid change throughout the world and the aim of QUT Pharmacy is to future proof graduates with an adaptable skillset and the skills to gather, evaluate and assimilate new knowledge.
In addition to our entry-level pharmacy program, QUT has a vibrant pharmacy research culture and broad expertise base.  QUT lead the Queensland Pharmacy Immunisation Pilot (QPIP) that provided the evidence for pharmacist vaccination to now be available in all Australian states.  QUT has a range of academics with expertise and interest spanning the spectrum of pharmacy practice.  We also have specialised skills in natural plant bioactive extraction and testing and novel drug delivery systems.
QUT Bachelor of Pharmacy students experience this research through their honours projects and undertake over 500 hours of clinical placements to apply their learnings to real world practice environments in Australia and abroad.  These experiences are integrated into classroom learnings through enquiry based learning models.  Students are challenged to debate existing structures to build skills as future pharmacy leaders. QUT graduates are empowered to question the status quo and develop innovative patient focussed practice solutions.
