Community pharmacists are well placed to improve access to skin health services, but greater investment in education, guidance and system support is needed to enable them to reach their full potential, according to a new FIP insight board report launched today. It presents findings from the FIP Multinational Needs Assessment Programme (MNAP), based on 142 eligible responses from pharmacists in 51 countries and an international insight board.
The report shows that dermatological presentations are a routine part of pharmacy practice, with 85.9% of respondents managing skin-related queries daily or several times a week. Pharmacists reported the greatest confidence in managing acne, eczema and scalp conditions, while confidence was lower for skin cancer warning signs, psoriasis and cancer treatment-related skin effects.
The findings also identify significant barriers, including limited access to guidance, unclear referral pathways, insufficient remuneration and a lack of structured dermatology services. Respondents highlighted practical, case-based training, stronger collaboration with other health professionals and clearer clinical guidance as the supports most likely to improve patient care.
Alongside the report, FIP has published an infographic summarising the key findings to support advocacy and awareness. Together, these resources provide a roadmap for strengthening pharmacists’ contribution to dermatological care through education, policy, collaboration and workforce development.
