Today is World Health Day and FIP joins the World Health Organization in celebrating public health successes that have improved quality of life during the last seven decades.

It is also the World Health Organization’s 75th anniversary. In 1948, countries of the world came together and founded the WHO to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable so that everyone everywhere can attain the highest level of health and well-being.

FIP was established almost 36 years earlier, connecting pharmacists across the globe and we have been in official relations with the WHO since its inception. Over the years FIP has made considerable strides in this partnership in order to expand initiatives towards achieving our vision and working together on areas such as workforce, patient safety and primary health care.

“Due to our ‘Non-Governmental Organisations in Official Relations with WHO’ status, FIP can speak at the meetings of the organisation’s governing bodies. We are in a unique position to advocate for pharmacists’, pharmaceutical scientists’, and pharmacy educators’ roles in the global health agenda. We congratulate the WHO in this significant anniversary and look forward to further collaboration to achieve health for all,” said FIP president Dominique Jordan.

“This year marks a historic moment as we celebrate 75 years of collaboration between FIP and the WHO. Over the years, this partnership has been instrumental in advancing global health through improved access to quality medicines, antimicrobial resistance, combating substandard and falsified medicines, and strengthened health systems. WHO recognises the invaluable contributions of FIP in shaping the pharmacy profession and improving the quality of healthcare worldwide. We look forward to a continued partnership that will drive innovation, foster collaboration, and enhance the health and well-being of communities everywhere,” said Luther Gwaza, designated technical officer for FIP and team lead, Norms and Standards for Pharmaceuticals, Health Products Policy and Standards, Access to Medicines and Health Products Division, WHO.
