BACKGROUND: Azelaic acid is used in topical formulations for the treatment of acne vulgaris. The commercial 20% azelaic acid cream (Skinoren, Schering SPA), as well as the ex tempore prepared cream suffer from disadvantages: azelaic acid causes local skin irritation (reddening, scaling, itching, burning) and even skin ruptures; azelaic acid leads..
