The Hague • 5 March 2026

A five-year partnership aimed at advancing self-care worldwide and reinforcing the role of pharmacists at the frontline of healthcare systems has been signed by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and Opella this week.

Building on a long-standing collaboration, the partnership reflects a shared ambition to elevate self-care as a core component of sustainable health systems and to empower pharmacists as key enablers of patient health literacy and access to care across the world.

The partnership is anchored in three strategic and mutually reinforcing domains: sustainability in pharmacy and self-care, health literacy and education, and equitable access to self-care. These pillars align with FIP’s Strategic Plan 2025–2030 and Opella’s mission to make self-care simpler and more accessible for people around the world.

The partnership will oversee the delivery of tangible, annual activities designed to drive measurable impact and country-level engagement. These will include global survey data and insights, awareness campaigns, and engagement at major international forums such as the World Health Assembly and the FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

“This partnership strengthens FIP’s efforts to support the delivery of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through Primary Health Care and the associated self-care frameworks and strategies by 2030, leveraging pharmacists as pivotal enablers of patient health literacy,” said FIP president Mr Paul Sinclair. “Through a programme of activities designed to drive measurable impact, FIP seeks to support national pharmacy associations and accelerate self-care adoption across diverse health systems.”

Importantly, the collaboration is underpinned by a shared commitment to independence, integrity and shared societal purpose. Both organisations retain full autonomy, under clear governance, compliance and transparency frameworks to ensure the delivery of societal value, the safeguarding of professional independence, while upholding the mission and reputation of FIP and Opella.

“At Opella, we believe self-care is the most important health revolution of our time, empowering people to take a proactive role in their own wellbeing. However, for it to be truly adopted at a global level, it must be built on a foundation of robust evidence. That is where the pharmacist’s role as a trusted, accessible expert becomes so critical. This landmark partnership with FIP is our commitment to unlocking that potential. By focusing in on three strategic pillars - advancing sustainability in pharmacy, championing true health literacy, and ensuring equitable access to self-care, we will support its integration into Universal Health Coverage frameworks, helping to improve health outcomes for all,” Dr Josephine Fubara, Chief Science Officer, Opella.
