New guidance to support pharmacists and the pharmaceutical workforce in preparing for and responding to Ebola virus disease outbreaks and public health emergencies has been published by FIP today.
The guide provides updated information on Ebola preparedness, prevention and response, and complements the World Health Organization’s guidance on filovirus diseases. It is intended for pharmacists working in community, hospital, primary care and public health emergency settings.
Building on FIP’s earlier Ebola guidance, published after the West African outbreak of 2014 to 2016, the new guide reflects developments in the understanding of Ebola virus species, clinical management, vaccination, infection prevention and control, surveillance, and community engagement.
It sets out practical recommendations in key areas, including prevention and health promotion, early recognition and referral, medicines and vaccine management, public education, collaboration with public health authorities, and workforce preparedness.
The guide also reflects lessons from recent outbreaks, including the 2026 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. An appendix shows how the guidance can be adapted to a national context, drawing on recommendations made by FIP Member Organisation the Order of Pharmacists of the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the guide’s external review.
