The Hague • 25 March 2024

“Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs” will be the theme of World Pharmacists Day on 25 September 2024, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) announced today. The campaign, led by FIP and now in its 14th year, is an occasion to celebrate the pharmacy profession and remind decision-makers and the public that the role of pharmacists remains crucial for building healthier communities everywhere.

“The entire pharmacy profession contributes so much to improving health and well-being. Thanks to pharmacy educators, we have a skilled pharmaceutical workforce; thanks to pharmaceutical scientists, we have essential medicines; and thanks to pharmacists, we have vital health services. From prescribing prophylactic treatments for HIV in Brazil and vaccinating children in South Africa, to helping patients in Lebanon manage diabetes and educating on medicines waste in The Netherlands, colleagues around the world make a difference to our communities every day,” said Mr Paul Sinclair, AM, president, FIP.

Major health needs have been defined in the global health agenda through the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 3, which include achieving universal health coverage; ending epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, combatting other communicable diseases; and reducing premature deaths from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment.

“FIP’s work is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, providing key tools such as the FIP Development Goals to support the profession and facilitate progress in all countries and territories so that we can reach our full potential. With FIP’s World Pharmacists Day campaign, our united voice has gotten louder each year and our reach wider. I invite all colleagues to take part in the campaign this year, show their pride in our successes and advocate our profession’s value and further potential in meeting health needs around the world,” Mr Sinclair said.
More information and campaign materials are available on FIP’s World Pharmacists Day webpage.

About World Pharmacists Day
World Pharmacists Day was adopted by the FIP Council at the 2009 World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Istanbul, Turkey. 25 September was chosen because it is the date that FIP came into existence in 1912. Each year, the theme is decided by the FIP Bureau. The purpose of FIP World Pharmacists Day is to encourage activities that promote and advocate the role of the pharmacist in improving health in every corner of the world. The day closes FIP’s World Pharmacy Week (19-25 September).
