Medicines reuse and redistribution can help improve equitable access to medicines while maintaining quality, safety and public trust, according to a new FIP insight board report published today.

Drawing on international evidence and discussions, the report explores different approaches, including restrictions on patient-returned medicines, structured redistribution within healthcare systems and humanitarian supply chains.

The report highlights the importance of medicine integrity, traceability, appropriate regulatory frameworks and professional oversight. It also identifies the need for clearer definitions of reuse, redistribution and donation, recognising that approaches must reflect national contexts and local needs.

The findings will inform FIP’s ongoing work to review its policy on medicines donations and support member organisations in exploring safe, appropriate and sustainable approaches.
