Role of pharmacists in the management of sore throat

A webinar organised by:
21 November 2024

A sore throat is a common symptom, typically resulting from an upper respiratory tract infection, the majority of which are viral in origin. As a self-limiting condition, it frequently leads to consultations with community pharmacists. However, it is also one of the most frequent reasons for unnecessary antibiotic use. A sore throat can be associated with various conditions such as strep throat, the common cold, allergies, or other upper respiratory illnesses. Strep throat, a less common bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus, necessitates antibiotic treatment to prevent potential complications. Pharmacists play a critical role in symptom identification and management through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. They are also essential in referring patients for appropriate prescriptions and educating them about the risks of inappropriate antibiotic use.
