    Cytoprotective drugs, cetraxate (since 1976) and ecabet (since 1993) have been used to treat peptic ulcer and gastritis in Japan. Sensory afferent neurons in the gastrointestinal mucosa regulate levels neuropeptides, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P and improve mucosal blood flow.
