The American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) guideline recommends that stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) should be administered to all critically ill patients who are at high risk for gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. However, SUP may increase the risk of nosocomial pneumonia and Clostridium difficile infection.
