Pharmacists are an important part of this primary health care (PHC) ecosystem. Their accessibility, medicines expertise and regular contact with individuals and communities position them to contribute across the continuum of care, including health promotion, disease prevention, self-care, early identification of health risks, management of common ailments, medicines optimisation, adherence support, screening, monitoring and referral. Strengthening pharmacists’ role in PHC also contributes to more sustainable and resilient health systems, including preparedness for climate-related, humanitarian and pandemic-related health challenges. Building on FIP's three WHA79 side events which addressed complementary PHC priorities, including self-care and UHC, safe and sustainable access to medicines in complex crises and humanitarian settings, and the pharmacy workforce’s contribution to tobacco control and wider NCD prevention, FIP is organising a digital event to mark the eighth anniversary of the Astana Declaration. The event will highlight the evolving contribution of pharmacy-led PHC services and global advocacy of pharmacist at WHA 79.

Emerging digital health technologies—including wearables, connected glucometers, blood pressure monitors, smart inhalers, and AI-based analytics—offer new opportunities for pharmacists to participate in continuous patient monitoring. These tools can generate real-time insights, enabling pharmacists to detect trends, identify adherence gaps, provide timely interventions, and personalize care plans. When effectively integrated into routine pharmacy workflows, digital monitoring has the potential to transform chronic disease management, improve patient engagement, and reduce preventable complications.

However, the successful adoption of these technologies requires careful attention to responsible implementation. Pharmacists must navigate challenges around data privacy, informed consent, interoperability, and equitable access. Embedding these tools into practice also demands thoughtful workflow design, staff training, and collaboration with healthcare providers, regulators, payers, and technology developers. Education is critical for pharmacists to fully realize this potential.

Humanitarian crises take many forms, from armed conflict, displacement, natural disasters, to public health emergencies, and they continue to affect millions of people across the world. These crises place significant strain on healthcare systems, disrupting access to essential medicines and pharmaceutical care when people need them most. Pharmacists are often on the front line of humanitarian response, helping to maintain continuity of care and support affected communities. Adeno-associated virus (AAV), a non-pathogenic single-stranded DNA virus that transduces both dividing and non-dividing cells, has emerged as a leading gene therapy platform. It persists primarily as an episode with a low insertional mutagenesis risk and elicits a comparatively mild
immune response. Eleven AAV-based therapies have been approved by the FDA Yet significant challenges limit how far the platform can go. Pre-existing neutralizing antibodies and treatment-induced immunogenicity restricts eligibility and blocks re-dosing, native packaging capacity is limited to ~4.7 kb, production still suffers from low yield and high empty-to-full capsid ratios, and finished products require stable formulations that needs to withstand ultra-low-temperature (≤ -60°C) storage, and controlled freeze-thaw without loss of potency. This presentation will discuss AAV's basic biology and structure, capsid engineering, manufacturing, purification, and
formulation advances and approaches to overcome these limitations.
