Background: Since 2007 Iceland has increased cooperation with Sweden in registration and reimbursement decisions. Due to the economic crisis, cutting costs was urgently needed in 2009, when changes were initiated, aiming at fewer reimbursed pharmaceuticals and tailoring use towards the less costly.
