  Background

  In the Malay World, native doctors and pharmacists were known to exist through mentions in ancient literatures. There is little physical evidence due to degradation through time and climate. 

  Methods

  I conducted a survey of Malay medical manuscripts concerning the Riau islands, and continued with a field work to the island of Penyengat.
