  In the last 20 years, expenditure on pharmaceuticals has grown faster than the gross domestic product worldwide. In a very recent report (4 Feb 2010) the US government estimates that health care spending last year (2009) increased by 5.7%, and prescription drug spending grew by 5.2% despite a projected decline in the GDP in the same period.
