Profile of Medicinal Plants found in Barangay Muzon, Rosario Cavite, Philippines

• Abstract:

  Introduction

  The World Health Organization (WHO) states that medicinal plants provide the health needs of eighty percent (80%) of the world’s populations particularly for various individuals within the rural areas of developing countries.

  Objectives

  This study aims to profile the medicinal plants in Barangay Muzon, Rosario Cavite, Philippines: an adopted community of the College of Pharmacy - University of Perpetual Help System DALTA.

  Methods

  The research design was descriptive and utilized survey as its method.

  Results

  Results showed that there were 11 trees, 19 shrubs and 20 herbs: a total of 50 plants found in the area. Survey revealed that these plants were used for food security, source of livelihood, promotes healthy lifestyle, for prevention and treatment of illnesses such as fever, stomach ache, cough, common colds, toothache, antimicrobial, diabetes, lowers blood pressure, antiseptic, wound dressing, antioxidant, purgative, diuretic, rheumatism, laxative, antidiarrheal, etc. Furthermore, they prepared herbal plants by boiling, pounding and squeezing and infusion.

  Conclusion

  In conclusion, Barangay Muzon has several medicinal plants cultivated by the locals for their food security, livelihood, healthy lifestyle, as source of affordable alternative medication and promotes camaraderie in the community. Finally, the university empowered them on proper utilization and cultivation of these medicinal plants.
