Mitigating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and fostering antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is the goal of every healthcare unit. Over the last few decades, the concept of specialisation in pharmacy has evolved in several developed countries to manage communicable diseases. Pharmacists, who collaborate with microbiologists and infectious disease physicians, possess strong clinical and evidence-based knowledge to develop appropriate antimicrobial therapies, reducing adverse events, complications, and resistance. This interprofessional teamwork not only improves antimicrobial utilisation in hospital settings but also helps advance the role of pharmacists in healthcare, gaining recognition from other healthcare professionals and policymakers. This session will outline various pharmacy specialities, with a focus on communicable disease management, the role of pharmacists, and the current scenario in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Genome editing therapies like CRISPR technologies can mainly correct point mutations. An editing system that could restore function of an entire gene (with multiple mutations) would be beneficial. We present a mammalian transposase that delivers large DNA pieces without inducing double-strand breaks, enhancing safety. Key challenges with this technology are the delivery of twopayloads, minimizing off- target biodistribution, while ensuring a high cellular uptake/expression.  Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) were engineered to co-deliver DNA and transposase mRNA. Optimized LNPs exhibited improved tolerability, efficient uptake, and considerable ABCA4 expression in Abca4⁻/⁻ mice photoreceptors, suggesting therapeutic efficacy in retinal diseases.

As antimicrobial resistance increases, so does the threat to millions of NCD patients who are at high risk of infection. People living with non-communicable diseases are more vulnerable to drug-resistant infections, and often have higher exposure to antimicrobials, for example due to diabetes-related infections or because of cancer treatments. Given the diversity of NCD-related health settings and specialities, it is vitally important to improve AMR stewardship and continuity of care across the professions. At this webinar, speakers from the five main health professions will share expertise and guidance on how interprofessional collaboration can be a key tool to respond to AMR and NCDs.
