Previous industrial revolutions liberated humans from reliance on animal power, made mass production possible and brought digital capabilities to billions. This latest industrial revolution is, however, fundamentally different. It is characterised by a range of technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, impacting on all disciplines, economies and industries, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human.

Digitalisation is already allowing the keeping of structured patient records, facilitating electronic prescribing, dispensing and administration of medicines, automating the handling of medicines in the supply chain, and providing tools for monitoring the efficacy and safety of medicines in use. Further advances will enable pharmacists to interact with patients through the creation of a common platform for accessing data and information in new, more efficient way.

This year's live virtual conference will feature renowned speakers in the field of pharmacogenomics who will focus on the healthcare value of pharmacogenomics. While the importance of tailoring drugs using genomics to reduce adverse drug reactions and improve efficacy is well established, economic evaluation of pharmacogenomics is still emerging. Payers, organizations who have implemented or are considering implementation are requiring economic evaluations, return on investment and cost/benefit analyses. Most clinicians are not aware of these data and its strengths and limitations.

Pharmacists have an important role to play in their prevention, care and management. FIP has developed a new handbook to support pharmacists and their organisations in providing a range of chronic respiratory diseases-related services. This handbook — which will be launched at this event — also identifies the knowledge and skills that pharmacists require for the provision of such services, thus offering guidance to academic institutions and CPD providers. This handbook is part of the FIP Practice Transformation Programme on Non-Communicable Diseases.

Learning objectives:

1. Explore the role of pharmacists in the prevention, care and management of chronic respiratory diseases and its complications;

THEME: COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH FOR DISTINCTION IN RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

The International Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences Research Conference and Exhibition (USIU-AFRICA/SPHS- IPHRCE) is the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ (USIU-AFRICA) Annual Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences Research Conference and Exhibition, with the mission to strengthen the academic, research, and community service agenda of the school by disseminating, sharing, and digesting various scientific outputs as well as other allied products, as well as networking and strengthening partnerships and collaborations. The conference is open to research scientists, health professionals, and undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking scientific and health-related research.

The objective of the conference

1. To provide a platform for health professionals, students, faculty, and staff to share their research findings; 
2. To strengthen research partnerships and relationships with other stakeholders;
3. Capacity development for enhanced information sharing and continuous professional development.

The conference will also help pharmacy and other health professionals present their research work and display their innovations in the form of oral presentations, poster presentations, and exhibitions. Additionally, the forum provides an excellent opportunity for sharing, cross-learning, and mentoring of younger scientists as well as a platform for the discussion of current health challenges, the exchange of new knowledge, and discussions on the way forward.

In addition to providing an opportunity to share research findings and best practices, it also serves to increase youth engagement and leadership in pharmacy and other health-related fields. The diverse range of conference subthemes caters to a wide range of interests, including those venturing into new and emerging areas.

Participants of the conference will get the opportunity to meet their peers, colleagues, and distinguished researchers, practitioners, and policymakers for three (3) full days of learning and education, networking, collaboration and mentorship.

The three days of the conference will include a scientific program with plenary, breakout, poster sessions and exhibition. The conference will be delivered in hybrid mode, allowing both face to face and virtual participation.

There will be a best research scientist competition, and certificates will be presented to the top four authors decided by an audience vote.

Current and future pharmaceutical education. Enablers and barriers to innovation and high quality education.

Among the greatest bottlenecks for the widespread implementation of precision medicine is the growing costs of the associated technologies. It also brings new challenges for health technology assessment, with cost-utility becoming more difficult to evaluate and predict at finer levels of patient stratification. What are these challenges? How could we address them? How might we go about refining precision medicine strategies to maximize cost utility?

The webinar will cover:

- The current health technology assessment stance on precision medicine applications

- What we know and what we don’t know about the cost-utility of new precision medicine approaches against the standard of care

- How costs may evolve with emerging technologies or trends

- Priorities for future health economics research in this area

The theme for this conference is Local and global partnerships to drive innovation and impact. THe event will bring together world-class experts and emerging researchers from around the globe to share and discuss their basic and clinical pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences and toxicology research.

The first of December commemorates World AIDS day and this year FIP will join this campaign by launching a toolkit for pharmacists on HIV prevention, screening and management. It is now possible to effectively prevent the transmission of HIV through pharmacological strategies (preexposure and postexposure prophylaxis). New HIV tests have also become available, including point-of-care tests and self-tests. Pharmacists’ expertise and accessibility can be leveraged for a variety of important roles in the prevention and screening of HIV infections. Join this event to learn about these roles and be inspired by examples from different countries.
