Our advocacy work

FIP is a non-governmental organisation in official relations with the World Health Organization, and makes the voices of over 4 million pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists and pharmaceutical educators heard in the international health arena and among policymakers.

FIP has contributed to the WHO’s work and the efforts of governments worldwide through technical expertise, advocacy and joint projects. To highlight a few achievements from recent years, FIP supported the creation, adoption and implementation of resolutions (e.g. the 2016 World Health Assembly resolution “Addressing the global shortage of medicines and vaccines ” [69.25]), contributed to global action plans (e.g. “Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance”). Our advocacy work has been recognised on several occasions, and recently by the WHO Director-General in May 2018. More about our advocacy work with the WHO can be found here.

Our areas of collaboration cover many major public health issues of global importance, such as improving access to and use of quality assured medicines, patient safety, and workforce development, to name but a few.

FIP’s contribution to the global health agenda and to improving health service coverage has been and will also be, in the future, key since health outcomes depend on the availability, accessibility and capacity of health workers to deliver quality people-centred integrated care,” says Sabine Kopp, Group Lead, Medicines Quality Assurance, Essential Medicines and Health Products, World Health Organization.

Supporting advocacy at national level

FIP also supports its member organisations in advancing pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmaceutical education at national level by offering leadership and upholding their advocacy strategies. Namely, FIP provides its members with an international array of best practices, evidence, data and intelligence from global surveys, reports on key global issues, policy statements and professional standards. In addition, FIP offers consultancy upon request to its member organisations when dealing with policy challenges or advocating for expanded roles and recognition of pharmacists, and FIP officers and staff members often provide direct support at country level by attending meetings with health authorities or speaking at national events.

FIP’s reports and statements are tools to be used to advocate for actions in different areas of health.
