  • Abstract:

Background: Melatonin, a drug for the treatment of insomnia, has a very low oral bioavailability (15%) mainly due to the extensive first pass metabolism in the liver. This leads to great interest in establishing whether pulmonary dry powder inhalation (DPI) is a promising route to deliver melatonin as a means of improving the bioavailability.
