    Pharmaceutical products used by patients are excreted via their urine or faeces. The pharmaceutical residues may consist of intact active ingredient, or breakdown products (metabolites) with or without biological effect. In urban societies with developed sewage systems, such drug residues excreted from patients usually end up in the wastewater
