    I. Background. Intact skin is a formidable barrier to the penetration of xenobiotics. Specifically, the stratum corneum limits very efficiently the inward transport of chemicals contacting the skin, and structure-transport relationships show that lipophilicity and size are the crucial determinants of (trans)dermal absorption.
