- Abstract:
The microbes that cause infectious diseases are complex, dynamic, and constantly evolving. They reproduce rapidly, mutate frequently, freely exchange genetic material, and adapt with relative ease to new environments and hosts. Through these mechanisms, microbes readily develop resistance to the anti-infective drugs used to treat them.
