The first food reported to decrease drug metabolism in humans was grapefruit juice. This finding was serendipitous and resulted from a drug interaction study with ethanol in which this juice had been a taste-masking agent. Grapefruit juice tripled the oral bioavailability of the antihypertensive medication, felodipine. It acted through..
