Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) causes a wide spectrum of acute and recurrent diseases in humans. Although the excellent antiherpetic agent, acyclovir (ACV) is now in clinical use for the treatment of herpes diseases, the appearance of ACV-resistant mutants is thought to be a serious problem.
