The HIV-1 envelope protein mediates entry of the virus into the cell through a specific receptor (CD4) and various coreceptors on the cell surface. Virus isolates typically exhibit a selectivity for utilization of either CCR5 (R5 virus), CXCR4 (X4 virus), or both (dual tropic virus).
