  • Abstract:

    Introduction

Antibiotic efficacy has been harmed by decades of antibiotic overuse and misuse, which has resulted in antibiotic resistance as a worldwide health problem. In many countries, storing antibiotics in the home for unsupervised use is common.

    Objectives

The objective of this study is to evaluate household storage and use of leftover antibiotics in the post-conflict areas of Swat, Pakistan.

    Methods

A multicenter household cross-sectional study was carried out in rural areas of the Swat district from December 2020 to March 2021. Household members were invited to the survey and a convenient sampling method was used. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire and SPSS was used for data analysis.

    Results

A total of 96 households were visited randomly and the majority of the participants were males along with the mean age of 32 years with basic primary education (n=28, 29.2%). Household members were aware of the term antibiotic (n=55, 57.3%) on the other hand didn’t know about the term antibiotic resistance (n=69, 72%) and also failed to recognized amoxicillin as an antibiotic (n=54, 56.2%). Most of the households save the leftover antibiotics more than one type (n=62, 64.6%) and Azithromycin was the most stored leftover antibiotic. The level of education is significantly associated (p=0.04) with the antibiotic’s storage. The presence of chronic disease patients and the storage of antibiotics are strongly linked (Median=1, IQR=2; p=0.16) as the patients believe that leftover antibiotics can be used for future illness.

    Conclusion

Lack of knowledge related to antibiotics was found and participants are unaware of the antibiotic resistance. One of the most pressing public concerns is the handling of unused antibiotics at home. In Pakistan, immediate action is required through community education and counseling of household members on the proper use of antibiotics.
