Organic anion transporters at the BBB facilitate the brain uptake of endogenous and exogenous organic anions, compounds typically ionized at physiological pH. Monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs, SLC16) represent a transporter family of 14 members, identified by sequence homology, of which only the first four members (MCT1- MCT4) have been shown..
