Evaluation of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pharmacists towards celiac disease

IntroductionElements such as the knowledge and attitude of pharmacists play an important role in the presentation of patient counseling services of pharmacists. Celiac disease is one of the diseases that patient counseling is important. However, when the studies in the literature were examined, it was seen that the number of studies that dealt with pharmacists, pharmaceutical practices, and celiac disease together was quite limited.
ObjectivesThis study aims to fill this gap in the literature and contribute to public health by evaluating community pharmacists\’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices for celiac disease.
MethodsA measurement tool including the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of community pharmacists for celiac disease has been developed based on the relevant studies in the literature. The measuring tool was applied over the internet to community pharmacists in Turkey. Obtained data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and explanatory factor analysis (EFA).
ResultsAs a result of the EFA, 4 factors were obtained: information on celiac disease, attitude towards celiac disease, counseling practices for celiac patients, and professional development practices for celiac disease. The factors explained 70.343% of the total variance. The Cronbach alpha values were calculated between 0.794 and 0.935. When the study results were evaluated as a whole, community pharmacists had a positive attitude towards counseling for celiac disease. Still, there were some deficiencies in terms of knowledge and practice. As a result of ANOVA, which was made to see the effects of demographic findings on factor scores, it was determined that pharmacists who had a high working year and encountered more celiac patients had higher knowledge of the celiac disease, had a more positive attitude, and included more frequent practices.
ConclusionTo increase the knowledge and awareness of pharmacists, more issues related to celiac disease should be included in both undergraduate education and vocational training programs.
