Collaborative Professional Practice Tool: A tool to measure collaborative practice between general medical practitioners and community pharmacist from the perspective of the community pharmacist

IntroductionThere has been an evolution towards an integrated multidisciplinary model of health care. Pharmacist-medical practitioner collaboration has been shown to optimise clinical outcomes and reduces health care costs. As pharmacist become more patient service orientated the need for collaboration increases. There are a number of models which generally do not have a validated measurement tool.
ObjectivesTo develop and validate a questionnaire to measure interprofessional collaboration between community pharmacists and general medical practitioner from the pharmacist’s perspective.
MethodsA content analysis of the tools retrieved for a literature review used was performed, resulting in an initial pool of 40 items. A 7-point Likert’s scale was used. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses were undertaken. Community pharmacists undertaking medication review with follow up and a control group, usual practice in 12 Spanish provinces were sampled. The total sample was randomly allocated into two groups; one for initial exploration with EFA and the other for validation of the model with CFA. Internal consistency was assessed through Cronbach’s alpha. The fit of the model was assessed using SRMR= 0.056, GFI= 0.889 TLI= 0.943 and RMSEA = 0.069 with confidence interval of 90% of (0.046-0.09).
Results336 pharmacists were sampled, with a response rate was 84.8%. The CFA confirmed, previously identified by EFA, a three factors solution of 14 items with a variance of 62%. Factor 1 (7 items) labeled as “Activation for the collaborative practice” explained 27%. Factor 2 (4 items), labeled as “Integration of collaborative professional practice explained 20%, and Factor 3 (3 items) labeled as Professional acceptance of collaborative” explained 15%. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were: Factor 1= 0.902, Factor 2= 0.813 and Factor 3= 0.827.
ConclusionA practical and empirical tool can be used for measuring the level collaboration, identify areas of improvements and propose strategies that develop collaborative practice.
