25 September - World Pharmacists Day!

On behalf of our Leadership and Member Organisations around the world, FIP is pleased to announce the inaugural World Pharmacists Day, taking place on 25 September 2010. This year, World Pharmacists Day is set on the theme "Safety first with medicines, ask your pharmacist", a timely and relevant topic as pharmacists around the world continue to work towards a greater role in patient care.

FIP is encouraging all Member Organisations to plan and implement activities that promote the theme of World Pharmacists Day that are best suited at national levels. Promotional campaigns, connecting to media and, most notably, interaction with patients and the public are key ways in which National Associations - and in turn their own Members - may make the best use of World Pharmacists Day for benefit to both the profession and society.

In a recent survey conducted by FIP and Pfizer, it was revealed that with an average of 120 patients served per day in a pharmacy, and one out of six of those asking for advice without buying a product, patients already benefit from asking their pharmacists for advice on medicines and health in general.

FIP Member Organisations continue to implement ongoing projects and initiatives that showcase the role of the pharmacist; it is hoped World Pharmacists Day provides another opportunity to do so. FIP asks that all who participate please send in reports, photos, videos and any and all material associated with the event to be showcased on the FIP Website - help us encourage others to become more involved in promoting the role of the pharmacist in safe medicines use.
