Statements and Guidelines
FIP sets global pharmacy standards through professional and scientific guidelines, policy statements and declarations, as well as through its collaboration with other international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and other United Nations agencies.
FIP actively sustains the pharmaceutical profession in developing countries through direct and indirect expertise. FIP encourages the adoption of necessary standards of health practice and focuses on topics relevant to professionals in developing, transitional and developed countries.
One of FIP's most important tasks is to provide worldwide standards for pharmacy. Different types of documents are issued for different purposes. Read below for an explanation of each type of document.
Position Paper
A paper exploring all the factors relating to a specific topic and usually presents possible options for solution(s) or courses of action.
The purpose is to stimulate debate with a view to establishing the organisation's line on the topic, thus making possible the drafting of a position or policy paper.
FIP Statement of Policy
A paper setting out the organisation's current, firm policy on a specific subject. Usually, in FIP's case, this would be a policy bearing on or a topic closely related to pharmacy.
FIP would, by such a paper, indicate the policy that it intended to pursue with other relevant international organisations. It would also expect Member Organisations (and Predominantly Scientific Member Organisations if appropriate) to promote to other bodies, including governments when appropriate, nationally.
FIP Statement of Professional Standards
A paper setting out the standards the organisation would expect pharmacists to observe in discharging their professional responsibilities in one or more areas of practice.
After adoption by the council, FIP would expect Member Organisations (and Predominantly Scientific Member Organisations if appropriate) to take steps in the light of local circumstances, to ensure that the standards are achieved by practising pharmacists undertaking the professional activity concerned. FIP might also issue Guidelines, which are FIP statements of Professional Standards providing more detailed information on a specific subject.
Joint Statement
A statement between FIP and another international organisation, like the WHO or other health professional organisations.
In emergency situations or on subjects that have humanitarian implications internationally FIP may issue a Declaration.
