Introduction
Pharmacy in Korea is going through rapid changes in all aspects ranging from education to medication safety management, pharmacy practice, and new drug development. All colleges of pharmacy in Korea have been running the 6-year entry-level Pharm.D. program since 2011. Its impacts on education quality and curricula, student recruitment, graduate study, and career choices are far-reaching. Likewise, pharmacy practice in Korea is quick to adopt a new clinically-oriented practice model that demands pharmaceutical care for improved patient safety and outcomes. To this end, community and hospital pharmacies are moving to adopt GPP (good pharmacy practice) standards. Further HIRA (Health Insurance Review Agency) implemented a nationwide real-time drug utilization review network to check for inappropriate prescribing not only at physician visits but also at pharmacy dispensing. Moreover, KFDA (Korea Food and Drug Administration) introduced a spontaneous medication error reporting system. The KFDA is now leading the effort to bring to harmonization the pharmacovigilance regulations in the Asia-Pacific region. Finally, it is exciting how the Korean drug industry has transformed its business model from manufacturing to new drug discovery. As a result of making investments in research and development, the industry has now made some successes in bringing some new drugs to market such as natural products, new formulations, new structural modifications with incremental benefits, and biosimilars. The Korean session is dedicated to briefing the details experienced by respective organizations such as pharmacy education accreditation council, national health insurance agency, food and drug administration, community and hospital pharmacy, and the industry.
