Social and Administrative Pharmacy Section Annual Report 2011-2012

The “Social and Administrative Pharmacy Section” has used the time after the name change to focus its activities. This was also triggered by the discussion about the Operational Plan of the section. We have decided to observe relevant developments in the regulatory policy worldwide and keep up with publications of ethical codes. Further the Section plans a series of section sessions to be held during the following International Conferences focussing on “Regulatory issues” and “Patient Safety” in a broad sense.

Successful sessions in Hyderabad

The Social and Administrative Pharmacy Section has again run three well attended sessions in Lisbon focussing on the following topics:

  1. “Regulatory legislation changing pharmacy around the world" (together with APS
  2. “Medication Safety and Risk Management
  3. "Medication Safety – Perspectives from around the world (short oral communications)

Centennial Conference in Amsterdam

The planning of the Centennial Conference in Amsterdam was the main activity during recent months. Three of our four suggestions were accepted by the programme committee:

  1. The dynamic healthcare environment – its impact on the future
  2. Social networks – friend or foe in medicines information? (together with the Pharmacy Information Section)
  3. Steering better future decisions – comparative effectiveness research (together with SIG Pharmacoepidemiolgy)

Section Projects

Although the project proposal “Social Networks and Social Networking: impact on health care delivery by pharmacists” submitted in 2010 was not accepted as BPP project we decided to work on this subject during the next years as we consider this development as very important for the future of pharmacy practice. The section session in Lisbon will present first results of this initiative.

In line with a closer cooperation of BPP and BPS we invite the SIG Pharmacoepidemiology to intensify cooperation with a focus on the methods used in pharmacoepidemiology to evaluate risks and benefits of medicines.

Section Newsletter / Publications

With the support of other Exco members Marina Altagracia has issued four Newsletters of the section in March, October and November 2011 and March 2012.

Other activities

Exco officers have revised several drafts of WHO reports. Marina Altagracia Martinez and Jaime Kravzov presented at the Conference of the Mexican Pharmaceutical Society In November 2011 on behalf of FIP.
Ann Lewis and Carwen Wynne Howels, both members of our Exco, presented their survey about existing codes of ethics in pharmacy during the BPP meeting in Hyderabad.

We also suggest to initiate a debate on Good Educational Practices whether we need it or not.
