Emergencies

Natural disasters and pandemics are among the emergencies faced by populations. As highlighted in FIP's Statement of Professional Standards on the Role of the Pharmacist in Crisis Management, pharmacists have an important role to play in such crises.

FIP has developed a number of tools to assist pharmacists and their associations in responding to emergency situations, and which can be freely used and adapted for national or local use.

Migrant crisis 2015

An FIP health advisory document, Providing Pharmaceutical Care to Migrant Populations: Information and Guidelines for Pharmacists and the Pharmacy Workforce, is available to support the provision of pharmaceutical care to migrant populations, in English and in Spanish

Additional tools include:

Software to convey medication instructions into Arabic

- Leaflets to facilitate the dialogue between pharmacists and migrant patients:

- An example formulary for migrants into Europe (based on http://www.adler-apotheke-hh.de/fluechtlingsversorgung)

Ebola: What can pharmacists do about it?

Pharmacies are often the first point of contact with the health system for patients and people with health-related concerns. Given the current outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in some West African countries and the possibility of it spreading to other parts of the world, it is important that the whole pharmacy workforce is well informed.

FIP believes that pharmacists can provide a crucial public health service by preventing the spread of EVD th

rough:

  • Informing, advising and educating the community
  • Promoting disease prevention and infection control
  • Screening any suspected cases and referring them in a timely and safe manner to appropriate healthcare facilities and health authorities

Being prepared is key.
