Who we are and what we do
The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is the global body representing pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, founded in 1912. Through our 132 national organisations, academic institutional members and individual members, we represent over three million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists around the world.
FIP is a non-governmental organisation that has been in official relations with the World Health Organization since 1948. Through our partnerships and our extensive global pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences network, we work to support the development of the pharmacy profession, through practice and emerging scientific innovations, in order to meet the world’s health care needs and expectations.
Molecules become medicines when pharmaceutical expertise is added. In turn, pharmacists — through ensuring responsible use — optimise the effects of these medicines. FIP is recognised as the leader of pharmacy at a global level. We continue to expand our presence and influence through partnerships with some of the world’s leading health, policy-making, education and science institutions.
Vision, mission and strategic plan
FIP’s strategic plan (“2020 Vision”), adopted in 2008, is to ensure that the federation is an integral participant in global health care decisions and actions. As such, the vision that FIP holds is that:
Wherever and whenever decision-makers discuss any aspects of medicines on a global level, FIP is at the table.
FIP is enabled to succeed in this vision through the recognition and respect it gains through the fulfilment of its mission, which is to:
Improve global health by advancing pharmacy practice and science to enable better discovery, development, access to and safe use of appropriate, cost-effective, quality medicines worldwide.
Carefully developed strategic objectives and tactical approaches complete the tools needed for FIP to succeed in this endeavour, the ultimate result being improved patient safety, care and health.
